A Guide to Giving

When you make a gift to The Cerebral Palsy League, you are joining a group of dedicated and generous community members who have chosen to help guarantee the future of quality care at The CPL.  Outright gifts,  in the form of cash by check, credit card or money order are most common.  The CPL also welcomes gifts of securities and real property and personal property.

A gift today of a fixed-dollar amount or appreciated securities such as stocks or bonds may allow you to take a current charitable income tax deduction for the full market value of the assets contributed.  Gifts to the CPL are tax deductible as allowed by law.

ANNUAL FUND:  Your gift is used to support the strategic priorities for the CPL.  Your donations enable us to purchase essential state-of-the-art equipment, improve and enhance facilities, and fund CPL programs and services.  Gifts to the Annual Fund help us provide education and/or treatment and educate the community about individuals with disabilities.  Annual fund gifts are generally unrestricted for priority use by the CPL.

MATCHING GIFTS: Provided by employers to encourage community investment and enable donors to double (or even triple) their gifts.

PLANNED GIFTS: Are arranged during a donor's lifetime, however, the benefits to the CPL often do not accrue until the donor or donor's beneficiaries are deceased.  Bequests are the most common planned gifts; others include life insurance and retirement plans.  You can help the CPL plan for the future by informing us of your planned gift.

BEQUEST: Outright or residual gifts made through your will.

LIFE INCOME GIFT: By establishing a charitable trust you can make a gift and retain the right to receive income payments for life.  Gifts to charitable trusts entitle you to a current tax deduction and allow you to avoid capital gains tax.

GIFT OF LIFE INSURANCE: Life insurance may be a means to make a much larger gift than you thought possible.  The CPL can be named as a beneficiary, co-beneficiary or a successor beneficiary to receive the proceeeds in the event the primary beneficiary is no longer living.

RETIREMENT PLANS: The CPL can be named as a beneficiary, co-beneficiary or contigent beneficiary of your IRA, Keogh Plan 401(K), 403(b) or other qualified pension plan.

TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL GIFTS: Throught out the year, gifts are mde to the CPL in memory or in honor of a loved one, family member , friend, or colleague.  Acknowledgements can be sent informing individuals that a gift has been made.

A small idea reaps great rewards.

The founder of Charity:Water thought he had a crazy idea.  He asked his friends to give up their birthdays and ask for donations instead of gifts.  Every year, the idea spread and more and more people gave up their birthdays!  He's now helped over one million people get clean water.  Google Charity:Water for the full story.

Do you have a birthday you would like to give up for the Cerebral Palsy League?  Let your friends know that you would prefer a donation to the CPL instead of a gift.  Ask your friends to give up their birthdays too!  How about anniversaries, other special occasions? Put it on your Facebook Page!

My mom's birthday is August 31.  I know what I'm giving her.  She is 86 years old and she lives in Florida.  I'm giving her the opportunity to help the Cerebral Palsy League's Adult Services Program.

I guess she'll find out what she's giving this year for her birthday when she reads this blog!
